 Profile

Steven Davies is one of the glut of young wicketkeeper batsman vying for a spot at international level and was picked out before he'd turned 20 as one for the future. It was clear he had talent when he finished above Graeme Hick in the Worcestershire averages in his debut season in 2005, and he was selected for the National Academy and toured the West Indies with England A that winter. In 2006 he scored 192 and topped a thousands runs as his name continued to earn column inches. A former England Under-19 captain, Davies has impressed everyone who has come across him and, vitally, his glovework is also of an excellent standard. However, the selectors were careful not to make the same mistakes with Davies as they made with Chris Read and James Foster in picking him too early. It was in the limited-overs game where he really began to advance and in 2008 enjoyed a prolific Pro40 season as an opening batsman. An uncompromising left-handed batsman, he likes to give it an uncomplicated thump when the field is up but also has the skill to build an innings. As England tried to search for a solution to their one-day combination, Davies earned a call-up to the squad for the 2009 West Indies tour. Cricinfo staff December 2008
