Board called on to censure Gayle for outburst

Cricinfo staff

March 14, 2008

Hartley Reid, the West Indies' regional umpires' association president, has called on the WICB to take action following scathing remarks by Chris Gayle following Jamaica's 17-run loss to Barbados earlier this week.

Gayle said bad decisions against his Jamaica team were "blatant" and described the umpiring in the game as "terrible for sports".

But Reid said the remarks went too far. "It's written clearly that players and officials may not be critical of the umpires, the match referee nothing like that, but Gayle does as he likes. I am hoping that the West Indies Cricket Board does something with him."

Gayle was unimpressed with the performance of Dalton Holder of Barbados and Terence Birbal of Trinidad & Tobago. "Holder was really, really terrible and it can't continue like this," he fumed.

"Umpires are not infallible, they make errors," Reid countered. "It's unfortunate if an umpire makes a mistake, hard luck but you play. He actually called Holder's name, that is another issue so we are waiting to see what the board is going to do with their captain."
