Matt Mason, the Worcestershire seamer, has signed a full-time contract with his county to remain as a player for the 2009 season, and has also agreed to take on a new role as the bowling coach on a yearly basis.

Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire's director of cricket, said Mason had been mentoring the younger players over the last two seasons on an informal basis, adding that the appointment was part of the county's initiative in strengthening the coaching team.

"Matt Mason has become an integral part of our squad since arriving in 2002," Rhodes said. "On the field he has had a tough 18 months but is now playing regularly with the first XI. He has certainly earned himself a new playing contract for 2009 but we want to look ahead so he will take on a dual role from October as a bowling coach.

"This appointment gives Matt some certainty for the future whilst he can concentrate on extending his playing career. I am delighted he has accepted the appointment."

Mason said he was excited about being paid to do something he was passionate about.

"Only 3 months ago I was wondering if I would ever play again so to be offered this combined role is more than I could ever have hoped for," Mason said. "As a player I believe I still have a lot to offer and since returning to the first team I feel I proved that.

"Coaching is something I am very passionate about and at Worcester I believe we have one of the strongest and most talented squads of fast bowlers in the country."

The Australian-born Mason, 34, became eligible for England in 2005, after completing the four-year residential qualification period.
