Upeka Fernando was schooled at St. Thomas, Mt. Lavinia before joining the Sinhalese Sports Club. He has become a regular member of the team and being just 21 years of age has a chance to progress into the national one-day team. He is a useful all rounder who bowls flat off cutters. A miserly bowler he has proved to be very effective in Sri Lanka's domestic one-day tournaments. As a batsman he usually opens the innings and does so in an aggressive manner. (17.01.2001)
